My mother says I need to try harder to save the world. She says it at least once a week.
I am one person. I yield no power over any other person. And still, I try. I let people with only two or three items go before me in the supermarket checkout. I try to always smile to people I'm talking to, even if I don't know them. I donate money when I can. I hold doors open for mothers with baby carriages.
These are just little things which make a small difference in someone's day.
But there are some who have power over large communities. They have whole masses of people following their every word. These are the religious leaders. And, it seems that the Jewish religious leaders have finally come together and united in spite of historic quarrels and disputes. Not only that, but they have joined forces with both Muslim and Christian leaders. The Vatican has even sent messages of support.
And what have they joined for, do you ask? What brought these influential people together, to overlook years of antagonism? Is it to call for peace in the Holy Land? The people who lead the religions upon which the western world is based on, are they trying to bring much needed love, decency and serenity to the area? To show that He (whoever He may be) loves without boundaries of nationalism?
No.
Apparently, the only thing that can bring them together, that helps them forget their hate for each other for a few hours, is just more hate. Yes, they hate each other, but they hate us more. Shamefully, they forget that only He can judge morality. They forget that only He can punish immorality. And so they take it upon themselves to call not for love, but for hate.
I have a favour to ask from you. Please. Go to Jerusalem. If I could give back the weeks I spent home last month and exchange them for that day in Jerusalem, I would. Please, somebody, gay straight, it doesn't matter. If you care for me, if you care for the health of our society. On August 10th, go to Jerusalem.
And to you, gays and lesbians whose comments I see on articles and message boards saying "I can't believe they cancelled Tel Aviv Pride", "Why do we have to go to depressing Jerusalem", etc. Shame on you too.
The Pride parade is not just meant to be a big party. There are bigger and more important things in life than shaking your ass.
Yes, the party is important, yes, we have a right to have fun. But do you think you could have the party if somebody didn't go through all this tedious political boring depressing stuff? We are not yet equal. We are not yet citizens just like everybody else. You have no right to complain about how society treats you, if you have a chance to make a difference, small as that chance may be, and you didn't take it.
Yes, I know that it sucks to have to fight for everything, when other people get these rights automatically and take them for granted, but that's reality for you.
So get off your ass, and get out of your bubble, and go to Jerusalem.
And lastly, yes, I know it's a bit hypocritical coming from me. I live in Europe, I'm legally married to a woman. Right now, I have more rights then any gay person living in Israel. But it doesn't make my points any less valid.
If I could, I would be there, front and center. And if a single person read this and decided to go because of what I wrote, then today I did one more thing to help save the world.
