I didn’t like Bergen from the get go, the trafic, the stoned roads, nothing in particular to tell the truth. Then luck came my way. Again. But when I returned there was a ticket. When I continued walking in the city (“just walk around it” the guy at the youth hostel told me, as if there is a city walking in it is not the recomanded way to enjoy or travel in it) I realized Bergen’s problem.
The scenery around it is so beautiful that the city itself, well how beautiful can it be? So it has to sell itself. Yea, that what I felt. Pretensious. More that you are. Wooden houses, ok. But as other pretensious city, it sets international acknowldgment for this rather banal thing Unesco wooden city. And the mountains around it are problematic as well since you cannot really walk. But “the seven mountains city” turned this problem into a blessing. You can go there by train or cable car and watch the beautiful city. Which is not that brilliant comparing to the fjords around it. But it sell itself as if it is. Pretensious.
and yea, the fact that i know some people who sourvived Bergen-Belzen didnt help as well.
