מאמר למחר Fast, Cheap, and Junk
At the past nine months, since I came to the U.S. I've gained about 1\4 of my body weight. America is known for its fast daily life and consequently its high popularity of fast food restaurants and its overweight people rate. Since the mid-seventies, the prevalence of overweight and obesity has
increased sharply for both adults and children. Data from two NHANES
surveys show that among children and
teens. For children aged 2–5 years, the prevalence of overweight
increased from 5.0% to 13.9%; for those aged 6–11 years, prevalence
increased from 6.5% to 18.8%; and for those aged 12–19 years, prevalence
increased from 5.0% to 17.4%. (in the
2003–2004 survey).
We live in a society where we find ourselves surrounded by fast
food restaurants that are spread all over the world. So what's it all about? Its popularity is linked to several factors, including quick preparation and a relatively low cost.  Macdonald's, for
example, the huge world's junk food restaurant, which has conquered 63
countries already. "I'm loving it", catchy and easy to remember title
that drove the peoples crazy and put in its owners pockets a few
billions of dollars, and don't forget the important of all, millions of toxics in its customers stomachs.
So where
did this phenomenon start? Ray Kroc was the first to open that
business. The first McDonald's restaurant was opened in 1955 in Des
Plaines, IL. and since ever then, it has started to grow huge. The question is, how has that little restaurant
business (that wasn't even meant to be spread around the globe) grown
into one big, huge, and famous fast food restaurants empire?
Have
you ever asked yourself, why do people keep on buying fast foods
despite the dangers that these foods contain? Well, just think about how much time and money you save, I suppose that tasty, fast, and
cheap food, buys the customers. People forget to stop and think for a quite moment, does their time and wallet really worth their health? fast foods cause several effects, such as overeating and obesity, huge portion sizes, high calorie content, tastiness, high
amounts of refined starch and added sugar, high fat content, and low
levels of dietary fiber, Hypertension, Type 2 diabetes, Coronary heart disease, stroke, Gallbladder , Osteoarthritis, ,Sleep apnea and respiratory problems, and some cancers. And although people are aware of these sicknesses they keep being blind and disregard the reality.
Poor diet and fast food restaurants affect people of all ages, but specifically teenagers. The teenagers of today are the future of the world tomorrow, as teenagers, we are raised in an environment in which we are eventually end up living in one big mess of fast foods and toxics, we do not know any other way of living since we were born into it, and I believe that some people have started being addicted to these foods and cannot live without eating them. We cannot avoid it, fast food restaurants are surrounding us every day and everywhere in our daily life.
Although the reality, teenagers need to be eating a variety of foods from the five food groups: breads/cereals, lean meat and meat substitutes, vegetables, fruit, and dairy-every day. But do they really? Well, researches have found that teenagers fast food eating has increased since the 1970s. Since then, obesity has also been on the rise
"Poor diet may harm teens' lung function. NEW YORK (Reuters Health)
found in a study of more than 2,000 high school seniors, that those
with the lowest intake of fruit, vitamin E and omega-3 fatty acids had
the poorest lung function, and were also more likely to suffer from
bronchitis, wheezing and asthma."
SOURCE: Chest, July 2007In one of the studies of poor diet among teenagers aged 13 to 17 years was found that of 54 total participants, 26 were overweight and 28 were lean. In the first phase of the study, researchers fed participants an
extra-large fast food meal in a food-court setting. Participants were
told to eat as much or as little as they liked. n the second phase, participants were reached by telephone. They were
asked to write down what they ate for 2 days when they didn't eat fast
food, and for 2 days when they did eat fast food.
On average, both overweight and lean teenagers ate a
very high number of calories during the fast-food meal. They ate an
average of 1,652 calories. Overweight teenagers ate more calories on fast-food
days than on days without fast food. Lean teenagers did not eat more
calories on fast-food days.
Lean teenagers appeared to compensate for high-calorie, fast-food meals by eating less during the rest of the day.
http://www.diabetes.org/diabetes-research/summaries/ebberling-fastfood.jspAt long last, I think we should attempt to avoid fast food restaurants or at least reduce the high amount of calories each meal contains and the meals' sizes.
