The problem with being an obsessive reader is that I read everything -books,newspapers,magazines,even advertisements -from cover to cover -don't miss a word! We subscribe to the daily print version of the Jerusalem Post . I read the wanted ads- even though I'm not seeking a job, the financial page even though I understand nothing of economics and reader's letters. I've even taken to perusing the Hebrew "Business Post'" that comes with the paper.
Anyway Ive just finished reading this lovely book by Dorothy Koomson "My best friends girl" . Kamryn, the heroine, is suddenly called to take care of her best friend's young daughter (Tegan -what a name)after her mother dies suddenly of cancer. This type of book is generally considered "chick lit" but I think the issues raised - such as race, adoption, mother-father-daughter relationships were well addressed if not slightly exaggerated. No six year old speaks or thinks like that in real life! Jody Picoult, another good author, also gives her young characters "older than their years" dialogue. Nevertheless it's a worthwhile and entertaining read
