Okay so "Warcraft" the movie based on the very famous games (or more accurately GAME) by Blizzard Entertainment, a pretty well respected, well known successful gaming company, home to many highly loved and played games. I'll get straight to the point, Warcraft - the movie, is based on the lore and happenings of the first Warcraft game, first in a successful trilogy I remember watching my older brother play. I gotta stress this point though.
IT'S BASED ON THE GAME BY THE SAME NAME.
NOT World of Warcraft.
"But isn't it the same?" NO. It's not.
As soon as you mention WoW in relation to Warcraft (even as a gamer) you're out for me, forget that the lore is based on a different game, WoW is an MMORPG, I've seen reviews talking about "this movie barely picks on the many things I invested as a gamer while playing WoW" NOT RELATED!!! leave behind the fact that there's a 25 year gap between the happenings of Warcraft to the ones in World of Warcraft, the someone who says something like this has obviously either only played WoW, or didn't play any of the games and speaks for other gamers, (or just wants to get back at blizzard for the awkward pandaria invation expension).
The Warcraft universe is far beyond the collection of wolf meat for some NPC, therer are books and comics and so much more than what you can find in WoW (which people keep on bringing up wrongly).
But now that we're past that. There is more.
If one more idiot is going to mention LOTR or D&D, I will call upon the Fel magic itself and make sure it sucks the fucking life out of you.
LOTR, or Lord of The Rings, for the idiots out there, is a classic (And amazing book trilogy) also adapted into movies, it's a fairly complicated plot in its own way, but the general feeling of it is: There's this Hobbit who's sent on a quest to destroy a ring which possesses great evil power together with his friends. Tolkien was a great author who created an entire world, a few different races, gave them languages and characteristics, which by the way is probably the only thing that could be compared to Warcraft, but then Warcraft is not the only franchise with the infamous elves, orcs and humans. This comparison is shallow and points out a lot more than stupidity in the ones who dare to compare like that. 1. Not only do they compare this because of use of similar races 2. They manage to ignore the entire plot and how VASTLY different they are!! 3. They manage to confuse LOTR with The Hobbit (oh man, how many of those are there going to be? STOP CONFUSING SHIT LIKE THIS IT'S UNPROFESSIONAL, OPEN GOOGLE AND CHECK YOUR FACTS LIKE I'M DOING AT THIS VERY MOMENT!)
So what if there are orcs here, and orcs there?? it's simply a race, and if we go into details, Tolkien's orcs and Blizzard's (Warcraft's) orcs are quiet different, and we can see it even in the movies. I won't go deeper, but simply googling "warcraft/wow orcs vs. lotr orcs" will give you a few good answers on how different they are.
And when it comes to D&D, originally a board game RP (role playing) game, also adapted several times into computer games and movies, I am less aquainted with this game, but judging from the previous points about the other books/games/movies. I assume that once again they were compared solely for the appearance of familiar races. Which again, how valid is the comparison? I don't know, but I could say pretty surely: invalid. Unless you're an idiot critic.
Lastly, the idiots who scored it down for: the way the orcs look, claiming the scenery is not impressive and claiming the characters are 1-dimentional (it's true that some are barely 2-dimentional, but calling all of them 1D is a little over board, and show how you paid no attention to the movie and the plot, just so you can say the bullshit you did). You are idiots, for once, let go of all the judgement of "massy fights" and all the other complaints, let go of "it's based on a game it must be shit" and try to ACTUALLY inveset into the plot.
I only know so little about Warcraft lore (I am more knowledgeable about WoW), and yet I could understand, and trust me, I didn't have high expectations for this movie, yet it surprised me for good.
So to summarize:
1. It's based on the game Warcraft, not World of Warcraft.
2. LOTR and Warcraft orcs are very different, despite being the same race.
3. LOTR plot is A Hobbit on a mission with his friends to destroy an evil ring
The Hobbit plot is a journey of a (different) Hobbit together with dwarves to return them to their original home and defeat a dragon (+ third movie which has a huge ass war between 5 different armies)
Warcraft is about a war which develops between humans and the orcs which invaded their land with the greatest thing at fault being: powerful dark magic called "Fel".
Vastly different plots if you ask me.
4.comparison to D&D because orcs???? D&D plots are different, and change according to many things, so it cannot be compared to Warcraft lore.
5. Bashing orcs for being ugly is racist in my book (;D), the scenery was beautiful considering it was a lot of CGI.
6. STOP. IGNORING. THE PLOT.
I'm done.
And once again, fuck you critics, you suck.
