Three days ago I was walking from uni to the train station, accompanied by two other students, one female and one male (a couple, perhaps?) who happened to have a train at approximately the same time as I did (mine was at 18:52, theirs was at 18:48, headed towards Haifa). As they were walking at the same pace as I was, I couldn’t help overhear bits and pieces from their conversation, and so I heard a brilliant quote by the female student by accident: ‘Change is shitey work [שִנוי זו עבודה מחורבנת].’
I asked her for her name, and she said it was Maya. I didn’t ask for a last name; I felt I was somewhat out of bounds as it was. I explained to her I believe in the quote ‘All who utter a saying in its sayer’s name brings salvation to the world’ (Pirkei Avot 6:6; this is the one uniquely Jewish ideal I truly admire), and told her I’d be quoting her in the future quite a lot. She was a bit startled and said it could be easily taken out of context (she was talking about how social protestors in Israel like making a racket and demanding change without realising what it entails), but I told her my friends are a smart lot, as am I (smart, not a smart lot), and she was calmed.
So, Maya the Student, thank you kindly for this quote.
Unum diem...
