To my friend
It was twilight. The sun was making its’ final journey for the day, hissing in the distant water. Not many people strolled the beach, still a little too cold. He was sitting there, on the beach. In his beach chair, sipping a cold drink and watching the sun. A strange looking man, with long hair and fierce eyes.
A woman and a child passed by, the child was smiling at the man, and the man was smiling back. A warm smile, coming from the heart. The mother snapped something at the boy. And he looked away. The smile on the man’s face faded away. A little pain was seen through the lines on his face. But then, he just looked at the sun again, and the smile returned to his face.
“It’s so beautiful, the way the sun colors the sky, all those beautiful colors”. It was a woman standing there. Watching the sun too.
“Yes it is” he replied. “I just love this time of day. Winter or summer, I try to be here, and catch the last rays of light…”
“I know, I saw you before. Can I sit here?”
Without waiting for an answer, she sat herself on the sand beside him. He looked at her. She was a little younger than him, and had a strong face, but in contrast, she had dreamy eyes. He didn’t remember seeing her before. But yet again, he didn’t usually pay attention to the other habitants of the beach.
“You want something to drink?” he asked. She nodded no.
He rose from the chair, moved it aside and sat next to her on the sand. She didn’t say a word, she just sat there breathing the air, and watching the sunset.
So they both sat there in silence. Enjoying the last minutes of light. He felt the cold breeze on his body, and the heat radiant from the body next to him.
She shivered, jumped on her feet and said:
“You’re cold. Let’s go…”
