more adventures in Ladakh Hey , and happy new Jewish year to all I just returned from a trek in Ladakh and it was really good. but before the trek I took a tour with a jeep with 2 polish girls and one english guy to two beautiful lakes : tsu moriri and tsu kar. the trip was great and the view was extraordinary. photo's will be shone later. we slept in a little village called Korzok who have nomad population. we slept at 4500 m altitude and I took diamox pills for prevention of altitude sickness. we had 0 degrees but slept in home stay with a family and the toilet was inside which is not so common in traditional rural Ladakh.
a few days later I went on a trek to Markha valley with 4 other people from Canada (Quebec), new Zealand and Australia. we payed 10,000 rupees for the all trek that lasted 8 days and included a guide, a helper and a pony man. we had 7 ponies and all the food that needed for the trek and the guide was also our cook. Tagla is a real Sheff and we enjoyed great variety of meals. the trek started on the Indus valley and we had to cross one pass (4800 m high called Ganda la). Im breathing really hard in high altitude so it took me a while to get there in very steep ascend. we descended to a village called Shingo and walked through a beautiful stream to the village Skiu where we met the markha valley. our 4th day was easy enaugh walking in moderate slope to the village Markha there we waited for the ponies who didnt show up for hours. it was start to snow when thy arrived. our old pony man got himself drunk from local burly bear called Shang and fall from a cliff, and he suffer pains in his back.
we left him in a house were he would get treatment from a local doctor (traditional Tibetan medicine) and continue on up the valley the next morning to a village called Hankar. from Hankar we climbed high in to a gorge called nimaling chu and in very cold and windy conditions we found the way to a pasture where we camped for the night. the evening was chilly and right after dinner it start snowing with windy condition (we were about 4150 m high), the next morning, we opened our tents door to see all white from snow and bitterly cold. our water in the battles frozen during the night and we ate breakfast in sub zero conditions. that day we went a long walk to our second pass- gongmaru la (5100 m). we walked up the valley ascending steeply to a little frozen lake and it was snowing the all time. after the little lake we Cross a few Mani walls (stones with Buddhist mantra's written on) and descend to a wide snowy plain with many iced streams. in a 1000 m from the hills there were two big tents- the "village" nimaling. after lunch, we ascended steeply to the feet of the pass and again I was the last, breathing heavily and walk slowly. it was cold and windy and the path began to be less steep until the path actually climb into the pass. the steep snake like path left the snow Fields for a while and than returned to be snowy on the last meters before the pass. the wind was hard and cold. we start descending from the pass in a steep path that was full of snow. I slided 5 times and fall on my ass until I got use to walk om snow. after one hour of snowy walk, we at last walked on dirt path that took us too a very dodgy pasture where our guide and helper/pony man establish camp. the night was humid and extremely cold (-5 degrees) but no snow nor rain. bottles and boots frozen during the night and the morning brought us new surprises... the tributaries of the SHANG river which we took to descend down was high then average and we had too jump between the slippery boulders in order to ford the many iced streams again and again. some of the rocks were covered with ice so jump to them was a dangerous business. we got our boots and feet wet when fall from rocks to cold water many times and after 2 hours of straggling with the white water we coincide with a dirt path that took us safely to the village Chikermu who actually was just two tents. we proceed to the second village chang and then to chang sumdu where we camp for the last time. we set on the pasture , in the hot sun, took out our boots and socks and get a good tan until the sun disappear beneath the mountains. in that evening, we ate an amazing meal. cheese-veg momo's, chopped chicken (tinned ), pies with cheese, dal soup and desert.
the last day hike was a second encore for the war between the horses and the cows. 3 cows came the morning into our pasture/camping site, and advanced slowly into the place the horses eaten theire hay. the cows try to attend the feast, and the horses didnt appreciate it too much. one horse turned around and kicked the cow twice in one of her belies. the second cow came along to another horse, but just turning to kick, she got the message and turn tail and run. 2 hours walk finished the trek and we get back to Leh to the comfort of a real bad, leaving tents, mats and sleeping bags to dry in the sun.
